Coated vs Uncoated Paper - How They Affect Color and Readability

Same file, same print run, same inks - yet two different papers produce two different results. Choosing between coated and uncoated stock isn't a cosmetic detail, it's a decision that genuinely changes how color looks and how easily text reads.

A client brings in a file - navy background, white letters, looks great on screen. We ask: what paper? The answer: "is there really a difference?" There is, and it's significant enough that the same file on two different papers can look like two different projects. We're not exaggerating - we've had clients convinced they'd received "the wrong color" from what they ordered, when the difference came purely from one print run going on coated stock and the other on uncoated.

This is one of those topics we treat as obvious in the print shop, but clients usually have no idea about it, because nobody ever told them. And someone should, because paper choice affects how a project is perceived more than the choice of typeface does.

What actually differentiates these two papers

Uncoated paper - offset paper, or simply "offset" in the trade - has no additional layer on its surface. The cellulose fibers are visible, absorbent, matte by nature. Coated paper, meaning gloss or matte coated stock ("gloss" or "art paper"), has a coating layer on top - usually kaolin or calcium carbonate based - that fills in the microscopic irregularities of the fibers and creates a smooth, uniform surface.

This coating isn't cosmetic. It physically changes how ink behaves on the paper. On uncoated paper, ink partially soaks into the fibers - it spreads microscopically, loses edge sharpness, and part of the pigment "hides" within the paper structure instead of sitting on the surface and reflecting light. On coated paper, ink stays on top, forms an even, smooth layer, and reflects light far more intensely. Hence the difference in color saturation, which is visible practically at first glance.

What this looks like in practice - color

Take a concrete example: a poster with a solid CMYK color of 100/70/0/10 - an intense navy blue. Printed on 170 gsm gloss coated paper, it will look deep, with saturation close to what's seen on screen in a proof preview. The same file on 120 gsm uncoated offset stock will come out noticeably paler, more "muted," as if someone added 10-15% gray to it. That's not a machine error and not the printer's fault - it's the physics of paper.

The difference is so significant that ISO 12647-2 standards include separate color profiles for coated and uncoated paper - PSO Coated v3 for coated stock, PSO Uncoated v3 for offset paper. That's not a coincidence. These profiles have different maximum ink coverage values (TAC), different tone value increase curves, and different white points. In other words: the same CMYK renders differently depending on the substrate, and a good print shop separates colors for the specific paper rather than eyeballing it.

Why coated paper "shines" more: A smooth coating reflects light specularly - rays hit and bounce off at the same angle, which is why colors appear deeper and more contrasty. Uncoated paper scatters light in all directions (diffuse reflection), creating the impression of matteness and a slight "dulling" of colors.

What about text readability

Here things get complicated, because intuition sometimes points the wrong way. Many people assume that smoother paper equals better readability. Not true - or rather, only partly true.

Glossy coated paper delivers sharper, higher-contrast text printing, because ink doesn't soak into the fibers and letters have clean, distinct edges. But that same gloss reflects ambient light - lamps, sunlight, a screen in the background - and at an unfavorable reading angle, the text can become hard to read because reflections "wash over" the page. That's why readers often complain that long text on glossy paper "tires the eyes" during extended reading.

Matte uncoated offset paper doesn't have this problem - it doesn't reflect light specularly, so it reads comfortably from any angle. But it has a different weakness: ink soaks into the fibers, so letter edges are slightly less sharp, especially at small font sizes. At 6-7 pt on thin offset paper without adequate weight, a slight "swelling" effect on letters can occur, which becomes noticeable on large print runs with less precise presses.

Matte coated vs. gloss coated

It's worth distinguishing something within coated paper itself: matte and gloss are not the same thing. Matte coated stock has a coating, but without shine - it delivers saturated colors, nearly as good as gloss, but without light reflections. That's why catalogs, books, and brochures with a lot of text increasingly end up on matte coated paper - it combines the advantages of both worlds: good color and better reading comfort than gloss.

Glossy coated paper works best where the wow-factor of a photo matters most - posters, covers, promotional folders with lots of graphics and little line-by-line reading.

A real scenario from print shop life

A client ordered a B2B product catalog, 32 pages, with lots of technical tables and small text. Designed on 135 gsm gloss coated paper because "it looks more premium that way." We printed a test sheet and showed the difference - the same tables on 135 gsm matte coated paper were significantly easier to read under office lighting, without reflections obscuring the numbers in the columns. The client switched paper at the last minute. Result: the catalog looks equally good visually, but sales reps no longer have to tilt it at different angles to read the data in the table.

This isn't an isolated case. We see it regularly with data-heavy materials - price lists, specifications, manuals. Gloss looks better in a product photo in the print shop's portfolio, but in real-world use it can perform worse.

A common design mistake: Light text on a colored background (e.g., white on navy) at a small font size is a risky combination on uncoated offset paper - ink absorption can cause small letters to lose edge sharpness. On coated stock, the same design looks much cleaner. If your project requires that kind of contrast with small text, gloss or matte coated paper will be a safer choice than offset.

Weight matters too, not just the coating

A separate issue that's often overlooked: paper weight affects how the stock responds to ink regardless of whether it's coated or not. Thinner paper, especially uncoated stock below 90 gsm, has a bigger problem with so-called show-through - where print from one side becomes visible through the paper on the other. With double-sided printing on thin offset paper, text can become less readable because content from the reverse side shows through in the background.

That's why for double-sided books or catalogs on uncoated paper, we recommend a minimum of 100-120 gsm, rather than the 80 gsm that would suffice on coated stock of the same bulk - coated paper has somewhat better opacity at the same weight.

When to choose which paper - practical tips

There's no single right answer, because it depends on what you're printing and who it's for. But there are sensible baseline rules.

Materials with photos, where visual impression and color saturation matter - posters, promotional folders, covers, packaging - perform best on coated stock, gloss or matte depending on the brand's character (gloss = more "aggressively commercial," matte = more "premium, calm").

Text-heavy materials for extended reading - reports, books, informational brochures, technical documentation - fare better on uncoated offset paper or matte coated stock. Less eye strain, better readability under varying lighting conditions.

Corporate stationery and "premium" materials like invitations or certificates - natural white or cream offset paper often looks more elegant and "authentic" than coated stock, which can sometimes undermine the impression of paper as a genuine material.

Materials with small text and tables for analysis - matte coated paper, because it eliminates light reflections without sacrificing print sharpness.

Practical rule: if photos and color dominate the design, think coated. If text for reading dominates, think offset or matte coated. It's rarely worth choosing gloss coated for text, and rarely worth choosing offset for large color spreads.

What about color separation for a specific paper

Here we enter territory that clients rarely control, but which makes a huge difference - the ICC profile used when preparing files. If a project is separated for a profile intended for coated paper (e.g., PSO Coated v3) and then printed on offset, the colors will come out paler than the designer intended, because the profile "promised" saturation that offset paper is physically unable to deliver. And conversely - a separation intended for offset, printed on coated stock, can look overly contrasty.

A good offset print shop asks at the quoting stage which paper the job will run on, and separates the files (or requests that pre-prepared files be supplied) for the correct profile. If you're doing this yourself in InDesign or Illustrator, check the document settings and PDF export to see which CMYK profile is assigned - and whether it matches the paper the job will actually be printed on.

Before you send a file to print - check the paper

  • Do you know what paper (coated or uncoated) your project will be printed on?
  • Does the project have a lot of small text - if so, consider offset or matte coated paper
  • Is the project mainly based on photos and color - if so, coated paper will be better
  • Is the file separated for an ICC profile matching the chosen paper
  • Is the weight sufficient for double-sided printing (min. 100-120 gsm on offset paper)
  • Did you ask the print shop for a test print on a larger run and unusual paper

Paper isn't the last decision in the design process, though it's often treated that way - as something you think about at the end, while filling out the order form. It should be considered as early as the color and font size selection stage, because it determines how that carefully designed file will actually look in the recipient's hands, not just on the designer's screen.
