Soft-touch is one of the few finishing effects that sells not through the eyes, but through the fingertips. The only difference is being aware that colors under soft-touch look slightly different than on screen or even compared to a standard offset print - the matte texture slightly darkens and 'mutes' color saturation, especially in light areas. If the design relies on subtle, light shades, it's worth asking the print shop for a sample on the same material before running the full batch.

If you're planning a combination of soft-touch with spot UV varnish (e.g., a glossy logo on a matte background), the UV mask must be prepared as a separate layer in 100% black, without gradients, exactly the same as with standard spot varnish. This requires an additional conversation with the designer and print shop before the file goes to print - don't leave it for the last minute, because corrections at the pre-press stage are much cheaper than corrections after die-cutting a finished run.

Soft-touch works best on large, solid color areas and matte substrates. On fine text, light shades, and surfaces touched very frequently - it performs worse than most clients expect.
