Advertising Flyer Printing - Format, Paper, Binding [2024 Guide]

We print hundreds of thousands of advertising flyers annually. We see mistakes that cost clients money - from wrong format through inappropriate paper to binding that falls apart. Here's what you need to know.

Why advertising flyers still sell

Residents of Krakow still pull flyers from Biedronka, Lidl or Carrefour from their mailboxes. In the era of smartphones and social media, this might seem like a relic - but the data says otherwise. Flyers have an 82% trust rate (vs 42% for online ads), and 73% of recipients browse them from first to last page.

Because a flyer is not just information about promotions. It's a physical object you can touch, underline with a pen, stick on the fridge. It has its lifespan - an average of 8-12 days in a household vs 3 seconds of attention for a Facebook ad. And it has concrete, measurable ROI - retail chains wouldn't spend millions of dollars on printing if it didn't pay off.

Numbers that say it all: An advertising flyer generates an average of 15-25% of sales during the promotional period. In the case of grocery discounters, this can be even 40-50% of total turnover in a given week. Every dollar spent on flyer printing returns 3-5 times.

Flyer format - A4 is not actually the best

First rule: the flyer format must fit in the mailbox. Most mailboxes in Poland have dimensions of 23×32 cm, so A4 format (21×29.7 cm) should theoretically fit. But in practice, A4 flyers often stick out of the mailbox, get wet in the rain, or are taken by the first random passerby.

That's why we recommend 205×290 mm format - it's almost A4, but 5 mm narrower and 7 mm shorter. A flyer in this format will surely fall into the mailbox and won't stick out. The difference seems symbolic, but in practice means much smaller losses during distribution.

The second popular format is 148×210 mm (practically A5). It's more compact, cheaper to print and easier to handle. It works especially well for flyers with fewer products - up to 20-30 items. Above that, products become too small and difficult to read.

Beware of non-standard formats: A flyer with dimensions of 220×315 mm may look impressive, but won't fit in a standard mailbox. The result? The postman will leave a notice or won't try to deliver at all. Non-standard format also means higher printing costs.

How many pages should a flyer have

Optimal volume is 8, 12 or 16 pages. This results from offset printing technology - each sheet is printed on both sides and folded into 4 pages. A 6-page flyer means two pages will be empty (and you'll still pay for them), and a 14-page one requires additional inserts which complicates binding.

In practice: 8 pages are enough for a small local store (15-25 products), 12 pages for a medium discounter (40-60 products), 16 pages for a large chain (80+ products). More pages mean higher printing costs and longer browsing time - and research shows that after 12 seconds, recipient attention drops significantly.

Paper for flyers - grammage matters

Offset paper with grammage of 80-90 g/m² is standard for advertising flyers. It's stiff enough not to curl in hands, but thin enough that the flyer won't be too thick and heavy. At 16 pages, a flyer on 80g paper weighs about 25 grams - optimal for distribution.

115 g/m² paper (often called "115 matte" or "115 gloss") is a premium choice. The flyer is noticeably stiffer, colors more saturated, product photos sharper. But the cost is 40-50% higher, and the weight is greater - at 16 pages about 40 grams. It works well for flyers with expensive products where print quality emphasizes brand value.

Newsprint 45 g/m² (like in daily newspapers) is a false economy. While it costs half as much, the flyer is too thin - colors from the other side show through, photos look pale, and the whole thing seems cheap.

Gloss or matte - what to choose

Glossy paper (coated gloss) gives very sharp photos and saturated colors. It works perfectly for flyers with product photos - especially electronics, cosmetics, sporting goods. But it has one drawback: it reflects light and can be difficult to read under a lamp or in bright light.

Matte paper (coated matte) is more eye-friendly - doesn't reflect light, text reads easier, colors are slightly toned down but natural. It's a better choice for flyers with a lot of text - product descriptions, price tables, promotion terms.

Practical advice: if you can't decide, choose glossy paper. Most recipients associate gloss with higher quality and greater product value. And photos really do look better - which is crucial in an advertising flyer.

Flyer binding - what holds the pages together

Stapling is the most common way of binding flyers. Two metal staples in the spine - simple, cheap, durable. It works perfectly for 8-16 page flyers. After stapling, the flyer opens flat, there are no problems with page turning, staples don't interfere with reading.

However, stapling has limitations. At 20+ pages, staples must be longer and thicker, which increases costs. And with very thick flyers (32+ pages), stapling may be impossible altogether - either the staple won't pierce all sheets, or the middle pages will "escape" beyond the edge.

Gluing - when stapling isn't enough

Perfect binding (PUR or hot melt glue) works for flyers thicker than 20 pages. Pages are glued at the spine, similar to a book. The flyer looks more professional, has no metal elements, you can print the title on the spine.

But gluing has its drawbacks. The flyer doesn't open flat - middle pages "escape" inward when opening. For the first few days after printing, there may be a slight glue smell. And most importantly - costs are 20-30% higher compared to stapling.

When to choose gluing: Gluing works well for premium flyers (luxury brands, real estate, automotive) and for very thick flyers (24+ pages). If your flyer has 8-16 pages and budget matters - stick with stapling.

Varnishing - protection and visual effect

Protective varnish (dispersion) is a thin layer that protects the cover from abrasion and dirt. Especially important for flyers that will lie long in mailboxes or be frequently handled. The cost is about 5-10% of print value - not much for the protection it provides.

Spot UV varnish is a premium effect - selected elements (logo, headlines, product photos) are covered with glossy varnish that reflects light. The flyer makes an impression of being more expensive and exclusive. But the cost is much higher - 40-60% of basic print value.

Most common mistakes in flyer printing

We see the same mistakes practically every week. A client sends a file "ready to print" and it turns out we need half a day for corrections. Or worse - the flyer comes out with errors we only notice after printing the first copies.

Mistake #1: Wrong photo resolutions

A product photo downloaded from eBay has 72 dpi resolution and 300×300 pixel size. It looks fine on screen, but after printing it's blurry and pixelated. For offset printing we need minimum 300 dpi at target print size.

Practical test: if a photo is to be printed at 5×5 cm size, it should have minimum 590×590 pixels (5 cm ÷ 2.54 × 300 dpi = 590 px). A smaller photo will be blurry - without exception.

Mistake #2: No bleeds

The flyer has A4 format (210×297 mm), so the client prepares a file exactly in this size. The problem is that printing machines don't cut perfectly - there's a tolerance of ±1-2 mm. Without bleeds, white stripes may remain on edges after cutting.

Solution: all elements that should "go off" the edge (backgrounds, photos, colored stripes) must be extended 3 mm beyond the target format. So for an A4 flyer (210×297 mm), the working file should be 216×303 mm.

Safety margin is different from bleed: Bleed is extending graphics beyond format. Safety margin is the distance of important elements (text, logo) from the cutting edge. Minimum 5 mm from net edge - otherwise text may be cut off.

Mistake #3: RGB colors instead of CMYK

A file prepared in presentation software (PowerPoint, Canva) has colors in RGB space - the same as a monitor. But offset machines print in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black). RGB has a wider color gamut - especially intense reds, greens and blues.

Effect: intense RGB red (255,0,0) after conversion to CMYK becomes a dirty burgundy. Electric RGB green looks like brownish yellow on paper. Always do a CMYK test before printing - preferably in graphics software with soft proofing enabled.

Flyer printing costs - what determines the price

Flyer printing cost consists of two parts: fixed (preparation, printing plates, exposure) and variable (paper, ink, machine time). The fixed part is about $50-100 regardless of quantity - that's why small runs are proportionally more expensive.

Example: A4 flyer, 8 pages, 80g paper, 1000 copies = about $0.15-0.20/piece. At 5000 copies = $0.06-0.09/piece. At 20,000 copies = $0.04-0.05/piece. The difference is huge - the larger the run, the lower the unit price.

When offset pays off

Offset printing makes sense for runs above 500 pieces. Below that, digital printing is better to consider - no setup costs, but higher unit price. The break-even point is usually 300-800 pieces depending on format and project complexity.

But offset has one big advantage: colors are more stable and predictable. For advertising flyers where faithful brand color reproduction matters (Coca-Cola red, McDonald's yellow), offset is practically the only choice.

Flyer distribution - the last step that determines success

The best flyer is worthless if it doesn't reach the recipient. In Poland, several companies specialize in door-to-door distribution: Polish Post, Kolporter, DPD Local, regional courier companies. Costs are $0.05-0.10 per mailbox depending on region and volume.

Targeting precision is key. A grocery store flyer should reach residential neighborhoods, not villa districts. A luxury goods store flyer - the opposite. Most distribution companies offer segmentation by postal codes, building type, even resident income.

Check distribution effects: Ask the distribution company for a GPS report from delivery - you'll see exactly where your flyers went. Some companies also offer delivery photos as proof of service. This costs an additional 5-10%, but gives certainty that money didn't go to waste.

How to measure advertising flyer effectiveness

An advertising flyer is not a "marketing expense" but a sales tool with measurable ROI. The simplest way is to track sales of flyer products during promotional period vs previous month. A 30-50% increase is a good result, above 100% is very good.

Other metrics to track: store traffic (number of customers), average basket value, complementary product sales (not just those from the flyer). A discount code dedicated only to the flyer also works well - then you see exactly how many transactions came from this channel.

Long-term, also track the repeatability rate - how many customers who came through the flyer return in following months. Research shows that customers acquired through flyers have 20-30% higher retention than those from online ads.

Checklist before ordering flyer printing

  • Format fits in mailbox (max 215×300 mm)
  • Number of pages is multiple of 4 (8, 12, 16 pages)
  • All photos have min. 300 dpi at target size
  • Colors are in CMYK space, not RGB
  • Graphics have 3 mm bleeds beyond target format
  • Text and important elements are min. 5 mm from edge
  • File saved as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3
  • Paper grammage verified (80-90g standard, 115g premium)
  • Binding chosen (stapling up to 16 pages, gluing above)
  • Distribution and recipient targeting established

Advertising flyers in the internet age may seem anachronistic, but numbers say otherwise. It's one of the most effective local marketing tools - provided it's well designed, printed and delivered to the right recipients. Cost is predictable, effects measurable, and return on investment often multiple.
