Let's start with something we tell clients practically every day: there is no single deadline for "offset printing," because offset isn't one machine and one process. It's a series of stages, each with its own rhythm and its own pitfalls. A file can wait for client approval longer than the printing itself takes - and yes, that happens more often than anyone would like.
What "turnaround time" actually consists of
When a client hears a deadline, they usually think of one thing: when the machine will start printing. In practice, that's only a fragment of the whole. The process starts much earlier - with checking the file - and ends much later than when the last sheets roll off the press.
The first stage is file verification, i.e. prepress. We check whether the PDF has the right bleed (standard 3 mm on each side), whether the images have sufficient resolution (300 dpi at 1:1 scale is the production standard for both offset and digital printing), and whether the colors are in CMYK rather than RGB straight from the camera. If the file is clean and closed as PDF/X-1a, this stage is short. If we need to go back to the client with questions - and that happens more often than we'd like - this is exactly where most time is lost, and it's time that doesn't depend on the machine, but on how quickly the client replies to an email.
The second stage is the actual print preparation: imposition, meaning the layout of pages or items on the sheet, plate preparation, and any color proofs. With a large offset sheet format - for us, up to B0, i.e. 1000 × 1400 mm - good layout planning has a real impact on the economics of the order, but it also takes a moment of thought before anything goes on the press.
The third stage is printing itself. This is usually the shortest part of the whole process - an offset press can run a sizeable print run within hours, not days. And here's the paradox that surprises many clients: the printing itself is short, but the whole process takes days, because the real work starts after printing.
What happens after the sheets come off the press
A printed sheet is not a product ready for shipping. Offset ink needs time to set, especially with heavy solid coverage and thicker papers - that's not something you can rush by force. Then comes the whole bindery process: cutting, creasing, folding, stitching or gluing the spine, laminating, varnishing, and for packaging also die-cutting and any finishing such as hot stamping or spot UV coating.
For a simple brochure, this stage is short. For a catalog with a stitched spine, lamination, and several language versions - not so much. For packaging with a die-cut, laminated board, and a magnetic closure, this can be the majority of the entire turnaround time, because each of these operations is a separate machine, a separate setup, sometimes a separate queue.
Why printing isn't 80% of turnaround time: Intuitively, it seems like printing must take up most of the time. In practice, it's the opposite - everything around the printing takes the longest: prepress, waiting for approval, and for structurally complex products (packaging, catalogs with finishing) above all the post-production processes.
Specific deadlines - no guessing
Instead of throwing out generalities, let's give real ranges for individual products, because this is the question clients ask most often, and it deserves a concrete answer, not an "it depends" repeated without numbers.
We produce labels in 3–5 business days. This is a relatively simple product logistically - small format, repeatable process, fewer post-production operations than with spatial packaging.
Brochures take 3–4 business days - the shortest among multi-page products, since they usually don't involve complex stitching or hardcover gluing.
Catalogs take 5–7 business days. More pages, more color versions to check, sometimes perfect binding, which requires more precise spine preparation.
Books - 5 to 10 business days, depending on volume, type of binding, and whether we're talking about a stitched brochure or a hardcover with a dust jacket.
Packaging has the widest range: standard production takes 7–12 business days, and if a prototype or sample is needed before the full run, add another 3–5 business days for the prototype alone. That makes sense, because packaging is a construction - a die-cut, creases, sometimes a window or magnetic closure - and no reasonable person wants to discover a structural error only after the full run is printed.
A packaging prototype (3–5 business days) isn't a formality to check off. It's the moment when you verify whether the closure actually closes, whether the window is in the right place, whether the laminated board isn't peeling. Skipping this stage for a new construction is the most common route to a production stoppage during the full run.
What really extends the deadline (and it's not the machine's fault)
From our experience, the biggest time-eater isn't production - it's communication. A file with an error that needs correcting and resending for approval can eat up more days than the printing itself. We know this firsthand - sometimes we wait longer for a reply saying "yes, approved, go ahead and print" than the entire printing and finishing process takes.
The second factor is the number of language or color versions. One project in four languages isn't one file check - it's four, and four times the chance that something in one version differs from the other three.
The third is structural complexity. A simple flyer and a box with a magnetic closure, a window, and spot UV varnish are completely different worlds, even though both are "just printed." Packaging constructions have to account for the die-cut, cutting and crease lines, separate layers for finishing, and minimum technological distances - and each of these elements is an additional step in the process, not just an extra line in the spec.
Custom-ordered paper is a different scenario: If a project requires paper outside the standard stock - e.g. a specific uncoated weight in the 80–140 g/m² range for a particular publication - the lead time needs to include the delivery time of the raw material. That, in particular, doesn't depend on us or on you, but on availability at the paper producer.
Offset vs. digital - does it affect the deadline
Here a myth often comes up: that offset always takes longer than digital printing. Not true in such a general form. For small runs, digital printing tends to be faster, since it skips the plate preparation stage. But for large runs, offset can catch up, and sometimes overtake, because the printing process itself is more efficient at high volumes. There's no single number at which offset "starts to pay off" - it depends on format, volume, paper, number of versions, and whether personalization is needed. The advantage of offset grows with the run size and a stable production specification, and its additional plus is color repeatability and solid-coverage quality, which matter at larger volumes.
Importantly - catalogs and books can be ordered starting from a single copy in digital printing, while offset is used from high print runs upward. So the choice of technology isn't a matter of "what's faster overall," but "what's faster and more sensible for your specific run and specification."
How to actually shorten turnaround time
The simplest thing you can do is send a file that doesn't need corrections. It sounds trivial, but in practice this accounts for ninety percent of the difference between a deadline "as promised" and a deadline "pushed back by several days." A closed PDF/X-1a or a correctly prepared composite PDF, images at 300 dpi, colors in CMYK, 3 mm bleed, a minimum 3 mm safety margin (and preferably 5 mm for catalogs, brochures, and packaging) - these aren't fussy extras, they're the condition for prepress not having to come back to you with questions.
The second thing - if the project involves a new construction, especially for packaging, accept the prototype stage; don't try to skip it. We know time pressure whispers "let's take the risk and go straight to the full run" - but a correction on a prototype costs days, while a correction on the full run costs the entire run.
The third - approve proofs and files quickly. This sounds obvious, but in reality this is the stage of the process the company has no control over, and it's most often responsible for "why is this taking so long."
Before you ask "when will it be ready," check
- PDF/X-1a file or a correct composite PDF, without color errors
- Images at 300 dpi at 1:1 scale
- 3 mm bleed, minimum 3 mm safety margin (5 mm for catalogs/packaging)
- Colors in CMYK, any Pantone colors confirmed beforehand
- For packaging - an approved prototype before the full run
- A decision-maker available for quick proof approval
