What is bleed in printing and why does it matter?

Bleed is one of the most important technical elements in preparing files for print, yet it's most often overlooked by those starting their design journey. Have you ever wondered why some prints have white edges, even though the design reached the edge of the sheet? The answer lies precisely in bleed.

What exactly is bleed?

Bleed is an additional graphic margin extending beyond the target print format. In practice, this means that if we're designing an A4 flyer, we must create a file larger than 210×297 mm, and all elements intended to reach the edge of the document should extend beyond the cutting line.

Standard bleed in offset printing is 3-5 mm on each side of the document. This means that an A4 flyer with bleed will have dimensions of 216×303 mm (3 mm on each side) or 220×307 mm (5 mm on each side).

Practical tip: In graphic programs like Adobe InDesign or Illustrator, you can set up bleed when creating a new document. This way you'll work with correct dimensions from the start.

Why is bleed essential?

During offset printing, paper sheets are first printed and then trimmed to the target format. This cutting process is never 100% precise – deviations of 1-2 mm can occur. Without bleed, such inaccuracy would result in white edges appearing where there should be color.

Bleed works as insurance – it ensures that even with slight cutting deviations, color will still reach the document's edge. The bleed portion will be trimmed off, but the main print area will remain intact.

Remember: bleed is not an option, but a necessity in professional printing. Without it, you risk white edges or the need to reprint the entire run.

How to properly prepare bleed?

Extending graphic elements

All elements that should reach the document's edge – backgrounds, photos, colored bars – must be extended beyond the cutting line by the bleed value. It's not enough to place an element exactly at the target format's edge.

Avoiding important elements in the bleed area

Remember that the bleed portion will be trimmed off. Therefore, never place important elements like text, logos, or key graphic elements in this area. Maintain a safe margin of at least 3-5 mm from the cutting line.

Common mistake: Don't move the entire design to create bleed! Instead, extend elements that go beyond the format. Moving can disrupt composition and internal margins.

Bleed in different types of projects

Flyers and posters

For single sheets, we add bleed to all edges that will be cut. If the flyer is to be folded, bleed is not needed at the fold line.

Business cards

Business cards are particularly susceptible to visible cutting errors due to their small format. A 2-3 mm bleed is absolutely necessary here, and the safe margin for text should be at least 3 mm.

Books and brochures

In multi-page publications, we add bleed only to external edges – top, bottom, and outer edge (opposite to the spine). Bleed is not needed at the spine.

Most common bleed mistakes

  • No bleed at all – the most common beginner mistake
  • Incorrect bleed value – too small or too large
  • Placing text in the bleed area
  • Adding bleed by scaling the entire design
  • Ignoring bleed with multicolor elements

Communication with the print shop: Always check the specific print shop's bleed requirements. Some require 3 mm, others 5 mm. You'll usually find this information in the technical specifications on the print shop's website.

Checking bleed before sending to print

Before submitting files to the print shop, be sure to check that bleed has been properly prepared. In graphic programs, you can use preview functions with rulers or guide lines to verify dimensions.

It's also worth exporting a PDF file with visible printer marks (crop marks), which will help the print shop with proper positioning and cutting.

  • Document has proper dimensions with bleed (target format + bleed)
  • All elements reaching the edge extend beyond the cutting line
  • Important elements (text, logo) are at least 3-5 mm from the cutting line
  • Bleed has uniform value on all edges
