Self-Adhesive Label Printing - Materials and Finishes

A label is often the only contact a customer has with your product on the shelf - you have a fraction of a second to convince them to reach for the jar or bottle. The choice of material and finish decides whether that label will still look good a year from now, or peel off after the first rain.

A customer brings in a design for a honey label, says “I want it to look premium, but cheap,” and looks at me as if I had a magic wand. I don't. What I do have is twenty years of experience with self-adhesive materials, and I know one thing: a label isn't just graphics printed on something sticky. It's an entire system - substrate, adhesive, laminate, varnish - and every element of that system affects how the product looks and how long the label actually survives on the packaging.

Before we get into glossy laminate and soft touch, let's be clear about one thing: choosing a label material depends above all on where that label will end up. On a jam jar sitting in the fridge, dripping with condensation? In a bathroom cabinet next to cosmetics exposed to steam and moisture? Or on a wine bottle meant to lie in a cellar for five years? These are three completely different engineering tasks, even if the artwork looks equally nice on all three.

Paper or film - the first and most important decision

Self-adhesive paper is the basic and cheapest choice. It takes print well, has a natural matte texture, and works great where the label doesn't need to withstand moisture, friction or temperature swings. Labels for boxes, shipping cartons, dry products, single-use packaging - paper is enough here, and there's no point paying extra for film.

The problem starts when a paper label ends up on a product that sits in the fridge or gets washed under running water. Paper soaks up moisture. It turns grey, wrinkles, and with prolonged contact with moisture it simply comes off the packaging, adhesive and all. I have seen this hundreds of times - a customer complains about labels on bath cosmetics, and the cause is banal: someone ordered paper where film should have been used from the start.

PP (polypropylene) film is resistant to water, friction and tearing. It doesn't lose colour under moisture and looks more solid - it has a subtle sheen even without additional varnish. It costs about 20-30% more than paper, but for chilled food products, cosmetics or household chemicals, this is not the place to cut corners. There is also PE film, more flexible, used mainly where the packaging itself flexes - for example on soft tubes or stand-up pouches.

The rule I apply at every consultation: if the product comes into contact with water, moisture, or is stored in a fridge - film, not paper. No exceptions. Paper under such conditions is a matter of weeks, not years.

Transparent film - the no-label look effect

More and more often customers ask about transparent labels that create the impression the print is floating directly on the glass of the bottle, with no substrate at all. This is the so-called no-label look, very popular in premium cosmetics and winemaking. Technically, it is transparent PP film printed only where graphics need to be visible - the rest of the surface stays clear, showing either the bottle's contents or the glass itself.

It is a beautiful effect, but it comes with a price and its own limitations. It requires very precise colour registration, because any inaccuracy in the print is visible against the transparent background - there is no paper to mask anything. On top of that, you need to print a white base under any colours meant to be opaque, otherwise the graphics show through and look like a faded decal. If you're producing a limited run of an exclusive product, it's worth it. If you're printing labels for ketchup made by the millions, it's an unnecessary cost.

Adhesive - the invisible hero nobody thinks about

This is where it gets interesting, because customers almost never ask about the adhesive, yet it is the adhesive that decides whether the label stays put at all. Standard acrylic adhesive works fine in most applications at room temperature. But if the label is going on a frozen product, the adhesive must be specially formulated for low temperatures - otherwise it will simply fall off once taken out of the freezer, since standard adhesive loses its tack below zero.

On the other hand, there are removable labels - ones meant to come off without a trace, for example from returnable packaging or reusable jars. Here, a reduced-tack adhesive is used, one that holds firmly enough that the label doesn't fall off on its own, but weakly enough that it can be peeled away without leaving residue on the glass. This is a completely different product from a standard permanent label, and it needs to be specified to the print shop at the ordering stage - not assumed that any adhesive will “somehow come off.”

A label with the wrong adhesive is one of the most common complaints I hear about. A customer wants a label for frozen food, orders standard acrylic adhesive because nobody asked about the product's storage conditions - and two weeks later gets a call saying the labels are falling off in cold storage. Tell the print shop where the product will actually live. That one sentence saves you an entire complaint case.

Finishes - the difference between matte and gloss, and why it's not just a matter of taste

Glossy laminate gives intense, saturated colours and looks striking under artificial store lighting - that's why we see it so often on beverage and confectionery labels, where the colour needs to shout from the shelf. It does have one drawback though: it reflects light, making text hard to read at certain angles, and fingerprints show up on it like on a plate.

Matte laminate looks elegant, and muted colours are associated with premium products - cosmetics, craft spirits, organic food often go in this direction. Matte hides fingerprints and small scratches better, but colours come out slightly less intense than on gloss, so if the design relies on vivid colours, it's worth checking a sample before printing the full run.

There's also soft touch - a laminate that gives a distinctive, velvety feel under the fingers. It makes a huge impression on first contact with the product, but it's more expensive and more prone to scratching than plain matte. It works well for products the customer picks up and is meant to feel the difference - perfume boxes, gift packaging, limited editions. On a pickle jar label it's a shot in the dark, because nobody strokes a jar at the supermarket.

UV varnish, spot varnish and other extras

Full-surface UV varnish protects the label against abrasion and moisture while adding gloss - it's a cheaper alternative to laminating, though not as durable. It works well for products that don't face extreme storage conditions but need extra protection for the printed surface.

A more interesting effect is spot UV varnish - applied only to selected elements of the artwork, such as a logo or product name. It creates a contrast between the glossy, raised element and the matte background of the label, which looks great under good lighting and clearly sets the brand apart on a shelf full of competitors. This solution costs more than plain printing, but for higher-end products it pays for itself through the impression the packaging makes.

On top of that there's hot stamping, i.e. gold or silver foiling applied through hot-press stamping - a metallic foil fused into the material under high temperature and pressure. This is a completely different technology from UV varnish and, note well, the two effects should not be combined on the same element of a label, because they are technically mutually exclusive. Hot stamping gives the most luxurious effect of all finishes, but it's also the most expensive, and makes sense mainly for smaller premium runs - spirits, cosmetics, gift packaging.

A real-life example: a label for artisan jam, 80×100 mm format. White PP film, matte laminate, spot UV varnish on the producer's logo. Cost about 35% higher than plain paper with full-surface varnish - but the customer sells this jam at three times the price of a supermarket equivalent, so the packaging has to justify that at first glance.

Label shape and die-cutting

Self-adhesive labels are die-cut to an individual shape - a rectangle with rounded corners, a circle, an oval, or a fully custom contour matching the shape of the packaging. Standard geometric shapes are cheaper, as they use universal production tooling. A custom shape requires a dedicated die, which raises the setup cost - worthwhile mainly for larger runs or when the shape itself is part of the brand identity.

Rounded corners are a small detail that's often overlooked, yet they matter practically: sharp label corners lift and peel more easily at the edge, especially on curved surfaces like bottles. A corner radius of around 2-3 mm solves this problem without changing the character of the design.

The most common mistakes when ordering labels

The first and most common mistake is choosing a material based on price alone, without thinking about the conditions the product will actually face. Paper for a fridge label, standard adhesive for frozen food, glossy laminate where legibility from every angle matters - all of this ends in a complaint, or worse, a customer peeling the label off in the shop and leaving the product on the shelf.

The second mistake is designing artwork without considering the finish. A subtle gradient that looks great on screen may lose contrast and look flat once matte laminate is applied. Thin text under spot UV varnish can blur if the line is thinner than the minimum width the machine can apply precisely. It's worth asking the print shop about the technical limits of the chosen finish before the design is finalised.

A third, less obvious mistake is ordering too small a run for a custom shape or special finish. Setup costs (die, spot-varnish machine setup) are spread across the whole run, so at 500 pieces the unit price can be absurdly high. Sometimes it's better to order 2,000 pieces that are more expensive to set up than 500 - because the per-unit price drops drastically, and the surplus gets used up in the next production batch anyway.

Before you order labels, check

  • Will the product come into contact with water, moisture or low temperature - if so, film, not paper
  • Does the adhesive need to be frost-resistant or, conversely, easily removable
  • Does the artwork have enough contrast and line thickness for the chosen finish
  • Does the label shape have rounded corners if it's going on a curved surface
  • Is the run large enough to justify the cost of a custom die or spot varnish
  • Have you checked a sample of the material and finish before ordering the full run

A self-adhesive label looks like a simple product - a piece of paper or film with adhesive on the back. In practice, it's a set of several technical decisions that together determine whether the product on the shelf will look the way you imagined throughout its first year of sales, or stop looking good after its first contact with moisture. It's worth consulting the print shop on material, adhesive and finish before placing the order, not after the complaint.
